Arguably our ears are the fiercest arbiters of truth. These days, botched accents or dialects in entertainment vehicles are the elements most likely to trigger flash-bangs of furious incredulity, and offend cultural sensibilities (especially now that we’re past the era of casting people in serious dramatic roles out-with their own ethnicities). Though the 1995 movie Braveheart was rife with historical inaccuracies – akin to Abraham Lincoln teaming up with Grover Cleveland to fight WWII alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger – it retained a plausible and satisfying emotional core in the hearts of most Scots largely thanks to Mel Gibson putting on an eminently passable, forgivably imperfect Scottish accent....

WandaVision is set to premiere on Jan. 15 and will feature two beloved MCU characters Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and The Vision (Paul Bettany). As the trailers reveal, this series will find Wanda and Vis living in domestic bliss in before discovering all is not what it seems. The series will pay homage to classic TV sitcoms and premiere new episodes each Friday. WandaVision is understandably the only major Disney+ Original arriving this month (because when you’ve got Marvel, what else do you need?...

The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special premieres on Nov. 17 and will reunite Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose, and Chewbacca as they observe Wookiee Life Day for the first time in Star Wars canon since the 1978 Christmas Special. And of course there will be some time travel shenanigans as well. November is a big month for the Star Wars franchise all around with The Mandalorian season 2 continuing to air new episodes each Friday....

However, Blomkamp has not given up hope. While chatting with the site Dexerto about his new battle royale game Off the Grid, Blomkamp gave an update on his planned District 9 sequel: “I am still working on it.” This certainly isn’t the first time that the director has shared hopes for a sequel to his best movie. Even before District 9 came out, Blomkamp promised SyFy, “If this film is successful, if audiences want another, whatever, District 10, I would love to do it....

“I suppose the one that I felt moved about because I’m a massive fan… Stephen Fry.” When Fry joined the cast of Series 12 two-part opener Spyfall, directed by Jamie Magnus Stone and Lee Haven Jones. He played a character codenamed ‘C’, the head of MI6, who’d previously struck off an agent codenamed ‘O’ and then died after a mysterious attack. We all know how that one turned out, with ‘O’ being revealed as the Doctor’s centuries-long worst enemy/best friend The Master, as played by Sacha Dhawan....

Few Doctor Who fans will forget Jodie Whittaker’s final moments on the show, before she shockingly regenerated into David Tennant, but when ‘The Power of the Doctor’ script was added to the BBC Writersroom script library, some were surprised to see her final words were different to the regeneration scene broadcast. In the episode, we saw Jodie regenerate after saying ‘Right then, Doctor-whoever-I’m-about-to-be: tag, you’re it!’ but the original script has this line coming before she says ‘Ah, that’s the only sad thing....

The real Mary Seacole (née Mary Joan Grant) was born in Jamaica in 1805 to a white father and a biracial mother. Her skin tone and accent as portrayed in Doctor Who is close to reality, though some modern artist renditions make her appear darker. Seacole learned traditional herbal medicine alongside her family’s expertise in the hospitality industry. She indeed did not call herself a nurse, but the gendered term “doctoress” because nursing as a profession was in its infancy....

These started on a Facebook group where someone suggested a credible BBC source had leaked the information (this person also leaked the casting of Sacha Dhawan as The Master). This in turn was then reported in The The Plymouth Herald and spread to other newspapers. In other words, it’s impossible to prove or disprove, and there has been no official announcement from the BBC, the new production team, or David Tennant (though his wife did Tweet this the day after the ‘story’ emerged)....

There is no kind way of saying that The Suicide Squad fell way below expectations, pre or post-pandemic, when it opened at an estimated $26.5 million this weekend. This comes in lower than even the $30 million floor the industry placed on projections for the James Gunn movie. These are not the kind of numbers that get sequels made. In fact, when accompanied with a $185 million production budget, it looks more like a number that will scare studios away from anything remotely similar....

Is Victor Stone man, machine, or monster? That’s the question viewers are left with at the end of the newest Doom Patrol episode. “Cyborg Patrol” ends with Cyborg beating his father, possibly to death, after being manipulated by Mr. Nobody. For Joivan Wade, the actor who portrays Vic, his character’s descent – as he edges closer to the bloody imagery of Jane’s prophetic painting that showed him murdering his DP team – is all the more tragic because he is supposed to be the superhero, and future Justice Leaguer, Cyborg....

Legacy. It’s the theme that’s defined the third season of DuckTales and it’s an incredibly rich one. In a family of adventures who’ve done things no one could have ever dreamed of, it can be tough to measure up. It can lead to a heavy burden; you have to keep one upping yourself and living up to the expectations of those who’ve come before you. This is a topic that’s rich with dramatic possibility… and this week’s DuckTales mostly uses it to tell some fantastic jokes....

It’s hard not to tie your work to your self worth. You spend countless hours pouring your talent and love into something and when someone rejects it, it can be so much more than them simply not liking what you made. It can feel like they’re rejecting you. It makes you not want to show your work to anyone, to keep it hidden. The more you do it, the more you also want to hide yourself....

Like many of the best RPGs ever made, Dying Light 2 features multiple endings that change based on the decisions you’ve made throughout the game as well as the decisions you make during the adventure’s climactic moments. While the game does a pretty good job of giving you the ending that best reflects the choices you’ve made so far (or at least the biggest choices), getting the “right” ending in Dying Light 2 (or at least your preferred ending) does require you to make every right move along the way....

While Covid-19 production delays and last year’s steady stream of largely underwhelming digital events have taught all of us to manage our expectations, there are reasons to be optimistic about E3 2021. As the video game industry (along with the rest of the world) slowly returns to something resembling normalcy, many suspect that some of the biggest game studios in the world will use the upcoming event as a chance to put their best foot forward and make everyone feel excited again....

FromSoftware’s open-world take on the Soulsborne concept is a sweeping triumph that, much like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, will inevitably change how we talk about the open-world genre as well as gaming in general. While the game’s already loyal fans are those who will celebrate the title’s success earliest and loudest, make no mistake that even those who have worked to avoid the Soulsborne games and their many imitators will soon be living in a post-Elden Ring world where developers across the industry will be looking to this title for inspiration and design cues....

Changelings are fairies who are left in place of a human infant or child that has been abducted by fairies. In [traditional] European folklore, fairies were thought to be responsible for children who fell suddenly ill or who would show symptoms of disorders that weren’t known or understood then (but which we now have names and diagnosis for). People would do all kinds of weird to downright dangerous rituals to test whether their children had been stolen and replaced with a Changeling....

Detective Pikachu’s Kathryn Newton plays Millie, good natured but scatty teen who is always late for class, often picked on by the mean girls, and who dresses up as a beaver to play the team mascot.
